What’s your narrative?…

Storytelling has become one of the most important tools in user engagement. With storytelling, you are able to say your own side of the story that in most cases, aligns with the mind of the targeted recipient.

The importance of a narrative

Many ideologies you hold firm to were created from narratives, they might have been amplified or not.

I like to refer to the Jews a lot in this regard and how a single story with corroboration actually still prevents them from seeing the truth.

In the Bible, when Jesus Christ was resurrected, it is recorded that the Jewish Leaders gave money to the guards to report that the body of Jesus was stolen by His disciples, and up till this day, it is still the narrative among the Jews (definitely not all). Check Matthew 28:11-15 for further reference.

Think about it, You most likely are doing what you do now because of the narrative you heard about it. The world right now is digital, so you can embrace stories that ordinarily don’t sit right with you unknowingly. This happens when it becomes a recurrent trend you come across.

A sample of this is the ‘bad marriage’ narrative and how even though we still have a lot of thriving marriages, they can be the loudest in the minds of a lot of unmarried people because people just keep on saying their sides of unhappy marriages.

Another instance is the migration to the tech world. There was a time that if you didn’t have a job in the oil and gas industry, it felt like you necessarily hadn’t made it but now, it’s the tech rave. This isn’t bad but goes to show how much people in the tech space are telling impactful stories thereby creating an amazing narrative of the tech world.

Who’s telling your story?

The experiences and lessons you garner from life are not to be kept in the cupboard to be revisited if need be, they are to be told. Someone needs your story to propel them to put their best foot forward.

You might think you haven’t done much, and yours might be that you have achieved a lot but do not want fame. You still need to tell your story as not every influencer is on Social Media, and everyone is capable of being an influence to someone – in small or great ways.

You were stellar with academics and got a great job with an amazing career trajectory. You need to tell your story as there’s a young girl pondering leaving school because she thinks school is a scam.

Yours might be that you weren’t great in school but have gotten amazing opportunities through leveraging on other areas of your strength and developing the needed skills – you need to share your story.

No platform is too small and none is too great to impact lives. Stop thinking your story doesn’t matter and won’t count. Your story is yours to tell, do the honours. Share your gift with the world.

Thank you for reading.
