It’s mental health awareness month and there’s really no better time to talk about how much pain emotional hurt causes.
I read a comment where a lady said she would rather physical hurt be inflicted on her than emotional hurt.
A major cause of this hurt comes from being served what Nigerians call ‘breakfast’. Breakfast is a colloquial term used to mean a painful and unexpected break up.
The opinion in this article is experiential and not a medical prescription or diagnosis; you may however find it relatable and very useful in this month and maybe always.
Every relationship has varying emotions attached to them but a ‘romantic’ relationship (one that is intended to lead to a marriage or a marriage) has a very high level of emotional attachment that isn’t just from the head but also from the heart.
When there is a disconnect especially without proper communication, the other party is left with a vacuum in the heart and a loop in the mind that can lead to headaches, heartaches, exhaustion, unintended withdrawal from the norm, sadness, in some cases depression and in other cases, higher levels of mental illnesses.
Humans are unpredictable and no matter how you try to stay guarded, you would at one point or the other release yourself to feel love and be loved; you can’t guarantee that a person won’t flip on you.
Here are some things that can help in periods of emotional vulnerability caused by heartbreak:
– Break off all communications
You need to get yourself together. You need to get yourself to feel like yourself again. This might be hard but you have to fight for your sanity.
– Express and feel all the emotions you are going through
It’s amazing to be strong if only you feel your mind is past the hurt already.
Express yourself and allow yourself let out all the hurt you feel; talk to a trusted person, take a break from your routine, do not be alone, journal as much as you can and work your way to becoming less affected by the hurt you feel.
– Create new habits
When you like someone, you tend to build your daily activities to involve them no matter how work filled your day gets, so when you are trying to heal from someone, you need to stay off activities that remind you of them for a while. Build new habits that can overthrow the existing ones.
Love is beautiful and should be sweetly enjoyed; taking care of yourself when things go otherwise should be totally prioritized.
I hope we meet partners that make loving worth it.
