How do you evaluate yourself?

Exposure, they say, gives your mind the opportunity to see beyond what it is used to and in turn, your mind expands to be able to visualise other things aside from those things it has seen before.

Exposure can be gained through travel, conversing and being in the room with more exposed minds, reading, seeing movies, among others.

While getting exposed especially through the lens of other people is great, there’s a thin line between getting inspired by what they do and comparing yourself to them.

It’s important to get inspired by people, that is, seeing the mirror of possibilities through others but it is much more important to understand that everyone has their purpose and the path to everyone’s destination though similar can be different.

How then do we know we are making progress, if we’re not comparing ourselves through the lens of others?

This is a fundamental question that hits to our core as humans. It is important to get inspired by others but the most important metric to evaluate progress and success is Vision.

This can be quite dicey because it leads to unpacking Vision issues. How big is your vision? What informed your vision?, among other pertinent questions comes to play here.

When you evaluate yourself based off comparison, it leads to

  • Misdirected Focus as your energy is spent trying to match what other people are doing rather than focusing on your growth.
  • Overthinking your decisions based on the decisions of others, rather than trusting yourself.
  • Unhealthy rivalry without cause.
  • Measuring the wrong things as the yardstick for your progress.

There is a uniqueness to you and it has to be channeled into creating the kind of life you have been created to live.

Watching someone live out their purpose is a call to live out your own purpose. It isn’t a sign to align yourself with their own purpose but to live yours and if it aligns with theirs; ‘that’s a match’.

Celebrate your wins and keep aiming to be better. Evaluate your progress based on the vision for your life and not someone’s…

You are Unique.
