Declutter – make space for the New.

When I see the word ‘declutter’, the first thing that occurs to me is clothes—sorting out the clothes that do not fit anymore or those I haven’t worn for the longest and probably setting them up to be given out or used as napkins for cleaning. This means they have lost their value over time and must either serve a better purpose with someone else or a lesser one with me.

When you declutter your wardrobe, you make space available to position new clothes and also have access to previously open space that wasn’t obvious due to too many clusters of clothes.

Think about ‘declutter’ but with your life now.

How many ‘things’ are long overdue?

What thought pattern doesn’t fit anymore but you haven’t taken out?

When last did you do something that isn’t part of your usual routine?

When last did you actually break off from the norm and pursue the real you?

To make space for ‘the New’, you need to acknowledge that you have had enough of the old and you need to take a breather.

Put simply, decluttering is easy but in reality and practice, it is a process that leads to growth, a hard one at that.

Decluttering for you might be coming to terms with that hurt you faced that’s still always looking you in the face and causing you to make wrong decisions. It might be breaking out of a toxic environment, cutting off the unneeded distractions, changing careers, taking a break, or moving countries.

Some tips on decluttering include:

  • Have your reason for decluttering.

What’s your ‘why’ for decluttering? Journal this down and put it in a very conspicuous location.

  • Set out the flip side of decluttering.

What are some of the things you do that you need decluttering to help you stop? Journal them down and write your ‘why’ boldly in front of them to help you stay resolute. An instance is:

I come home drunk every other night                         – I need to change my circle of friends

My budget for the month is always exceeded            – I need to change my circle of friends

I only think of partying and not advancing my career – I need to change my circle of friends

  • Have ground rules

Set rules that keep you grounded on your decluttering process. You might be hard on yourself but it’s worth it. You can also get someone to keep you accountable.

  • Set SMART goals around your ‘why’

Let your goals be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound.

  • Reward yourself on your journey

Celebrate your every win in your decluttering journey.

No matter what decluttering is for you, the pain of breaking away will always be worth it when you embrace the New.
